Visit to Dalmatian Coast

In the middle of winter in frozen Regina (Saskatchewan, Canada where they take their winters seriously) I usually dream of marathons in southern climates. So when friends said they were going to Split Marathon on the Croatian Adriatic Coast I didn’t think twice, I had to go. Fifteenth of February on the Adriatic had to be better than running in snow and ice, right? Also inviting were the nice memories of the beautiful Split. In my young days it was the usual destination and a train terminus from where we sailed up and down the coast to any of the small towns on the mainland and the islands.
So here I was, in Split on the Friday before the marathon. We stayed in the superb hotel Ambasador on the Riva. Here I should say a few things about Split. It is an ancient town under the steep Dinaric mountain Biokovo. Second largest Croatian city after the capital Zagreb, it has been built up around the Diocletian’s palace dating to the 3rd century CE. Roman emperor Diocletian made it his capital and supplied it with water through an aqueduct that still serves the City. On the pretty bay he built his fortified palace which is now the living heart of the city on the bay flanked by a cozy port on the left and the wooded Marjan Hill on the right, connected by the wide seashore avenue, Riva.
There were some good things and some not so good about Split in February. All my previous visits to the area were in summer, so cool temperatures (about 8-15C) and rain with “bura” (wind) were not expected. Yet, calm sunny days followed the grey wet mornings. And the payback was the uncrowded city where we had undivided attention in our superb hotel’s restaurant and access to tourist attractions that were open in the off season.
Ah yes, about the marathon. The course threaded its way around the city, through some industrial areas and along the empty winter beaches. It was on good pavements and well marshalled…unless…well I’ll tell you later… On the marathon Sunday we were lucky with the weather, it was pretty much a perfect for a run.
My marathon was not so good; entirely my fault. Finish time 6:15, dead last of 611 finishers, which meant that the final 20 km I ran alone: no volunteers, course marking gone, no spectators. My nagging mantra was, “I should’ve done more long runs”. But, thank god, nothing hurt and the views were nice. As they say, it could’ve been worse.
Monday morning after the marathon we took a bus to Dubrovnik further down the coast. It was nice being there in the off season, walking the empty Stradun and the steep narrow streets on either side. We also took the walk on the city ramparts which completely encircle the old city. It provided nice views of the town and the port below and the expanse of the Adriatic. After the night in Dubrovnik we returned to Split.
Wednesday was a day visit to the Krka National Park. River Krka flows in scenic cataracts down the green mountain slopes. The waters are partly channeled off to drive water mills for grinding grain and wet felting, an ancient technique for making dense woollen fabrics.
My 85th birthday is in April. A few days later I intend to run the local Gopher Attack Marathon. I promise I’ll train next few weeks. I hope to do better than 6:15. As they say, “this and a quarter will buy me a cup of coffee.
